Talking Rabbits With Watches… what Alice in Wonderland can teach us about having a plan
One of my favourite Childhood books is celebrating its 150th Anniversary today…
…Alice in Wonderland.
Now you may be surprised to hear that it’s my favourite story. After all, tales of talking rabbits with watches, smoking caterpillars, confusing walruses and a slightly sinister grinning cat aren’t usually my thing.
But it’s not my favourite tale because of the quirky characters and confusing storylines.
It actually taught me an important lesson in business…
On her journey, Alice comes across the Cheshire Cat, sitting high in a tree:
“Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?’
‘That depends a good deal on where you want to get to,’ said the Cat.
‘I don’t much care where -‘ said Alice.
‘Then it doesn’t matter which way you go,’ said the Cat.
‘- So long as I get SOMEWHERE,’ Alice added as an explanation.
‘Oh, you’re sure to do that,’ said the Cat, ‘if you only walk long enough.”
What’s the Cheshire Cat trying to tell us?
That it’s important to know where you want to get to in life. If you don’t have specific goals for your business, then it doesn’t matter what you do, you’ll get somewhere.
But you won’t get to where you want to be. Without a clear plan, how can you make the right decisions to get to where you want to be?
That’s why I always know what my end goal is, and I make sure my team do too.
That way, we can make the right decisions and choose the right paths to get to where we want to be.
It might be time to dig out my old copy of Alice in Wonderland, and see what else I can learn.
